There’s just something about the end of the school year that feels equal parts exciting, emotional, chaotic, and completely exhausting. One minute you’re counting down the days until summer break, and the next you’re trying to remember which child needs a field trip shirt, a teacher gift, snacks for the class party, and sunscreen for spirit day.
May somehow feels busier than December.
As moms, we carry so much during this season. We’re juggling school concerts, sports schedules, graduations, spirit weeks, teacher appreciation gifts, class parties, and trying to keep the house from looking like a tornado passed through it. At the same time, we’re also trying to prepare for summer — planning vacations, finding activities for the kids, updating summer wardrobes, and mentally preparing ourselves for hearing “I’m bored” approximately 47 times a day.
But hidden inside all of the chaos are some of the moments we’ll remember most.
The excitement on their faces walking out of school on the last day. The backpacks dropped dramatically by the front door. The late bedtimes, popsicles outside, neighborhood bike rides, pool days, and slower mornings that somehow make all the craziness worth it.
Summer doesn’t have to be perfectly planned to be magical.
Some of the best memories happen in the simplest moments:
Ice cream runs after dinner
Sprinklers in the backyard
Movie nights in pajamas
Last-minute road trips
Target runs that somehow turn into Starbucks dates with your kids
As moms, there’s so much pressure to create the “perfect summer,” but the truth is, our kids usually remember the little things most. They remember that we were there. That we laughed with them. That we made ordinary days feel special.
So if you’re ending the school year feeling overwhelmed, behind, emotional, or exhausted — you’re not alone. Most moms are running on caffeine, dry shampoo, and pure determination this time of year.
Here’s your reminder that you don’t need a color-coded summer bucket list to create a meaningful summer for your family. Sometimes the best days are the unplanned ones.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have approximately 12 school emails to read, 4 permission slips to sign, and a child asking for snacks even though they just ate five minutes ago.
Welcome to summer, moms!
